Tokyo Success Boosts Interest in Tennis

Aucklander’s have caught the tennis bug after the success of tennis at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with coaching programmes reaching capacity at Scarbro Tennis Centre.

After the New Zealand Men’s Doubles pairing Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell bought home a bronze medal from the Tokyo 2020 Games, interest in tennis has gown with more Aucklander’s than ever keen to pick up a racket for the first time.

All Tennis Xpress classes, the Tennis NZ adult beginner programme, and Tennis Advance, the follow on programme to Tennis Xpress, are fully booked for Term 3 at Scarbro Tennis Centre, with the indoor courts at the centre at capacity on Monday evenings.  Classes are also filling up for Tennis Hots Shots courses,  the national junior starter programme for children aged 3-12 years, with many sessions close to capacity.

All Tennis Auckland coaching programmes are designed to give participants skills and confidence on court that they can then take away to enjoy the game with friends and family, either in a social or club environment, and it’s hoped that strong interest at these entry levels indicate ongoing growth for the sport throughout the region.  While coaching programmes at Scarbro Tennis Centre have shown growth over the past 12 months, having classes reach capacity is a strong indication of the popularity of the sport in New Zealand as people look for fun and social ways to stay active in a ‘socially distanced’ environment.

Tennis Auckland are currently taking registrations of interest for Term 4 classes.
