Tennis Auckland Tribute – Nyree Smith

  • Post category:News

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Nyree Smith after her courageous eight-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Nyree worked with Tennis Auckland from 2012 to 2018 as our Interclub Administrator. Although she didn’t come from a tennis background, she quickly picked up the rules and nuances of the game, earning the admiration and respect of players, captains, and officials across the region.

With her bubbly personality, infectious energy, and friendly manner, Nyree brought people together and formed lasting friendships throughout the tennis community. She was fun to be around, full of ideas, and possessed a genuine “can do” attitude that made a real difference in everything she took on. Whether managing interclub logistics or volunteering long hours at the ASB Classic in various roles, Nyree gave her all with enthusiasm and grace.

Her legacy is one of warmth, commitment, and a life lived with purpose. She fought a Nadal-like battle—tenacious and brave—against an opponent no one can ever truly beat. And through it all, she continued to inspire and support others with characteristic selflessness.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Wayne, Leah, Conrad, and all of Nyree’s family and friends. She will be missed dearly by everyone who had the pleasure of working with her and knowing her.

Rest in peace, Nyree.
