Ten Years at the Top: Auckland’s Legacy Continues in 2025

  • Post category:News

The 2025 National Junior Teams Event brought another exciting chapter to New Zealand’s junior tennis calendar, with Auckland’s rising stars continuing to lead the way. Despite a week of disruptive weather that played havoc with scheduling, shortening matches and extending days at the courts, our players met every challenge with grit and determination.

This year’s event venues were split between two regions. Christchurch hosted the 12 and 14 and under age groups, while the 17’s competed in Waikato. The unpredictable conditions required flexibility, with revised formats and long days becoming the norm. Through it all, Auckland’s teams adapted and performed exceptionally well.

The top seeded 17 and under team delivered a standout performance in Waikato, capturing the gold medal. Their ability to stay focused under pressure confirmed their place as the country’s leading junior team and demonstrated the depth of talent within the Auckland region.

In Christchurch, both the 12 and under and 14 and under teams claimed silver medals. The third seeded 12s were narrowly edged out of gold in a countback based on sets, showing just how closely contested the event was. The 14s also played well throughout the tournament and matched their seeding with a strong second-place finish.

These combined results secured Auckland the coveted “Region of the Year” title for a record tenth consecutive time. What a legacy. This remarkable achievement reflects the strength of our regional development programs, the tireless efforts of the coaches across the Auckland region, and the unwavering commitment of our young athletes and families.

A special thank you goes to Lexus Christchurch for extending their ASB Classic support by providing a vehicle for our team during the event. Their contribution made travel more comfortable and efficient.

Each year, as part of the National Junior Teams Event, I ask each team coach to nominate a Most Valuable Player. This is someone who has made an outstanding contribution not only through their performance on court but also through their positive impact on the team experience and culture.
